95 KEEROM
This urbane restaurant - modern in the very best sense (unpretentious and comfortable) -- is proof that the Cape Town dining scene has come of age. Not only because it feels good to walk through (intimate spaces downstairs showcase the building's age with raw brickwork, offset with slate and glass, and plenty of wood; upstairs an ancient olive tree serves as organic centerpiece), but because the food is simple and straightforward, service is excellent, and owner Giorgio hasn't felt the same compunction to charge high prices just because he can. It's affordable glam, and Capetonians love it. The waitstaff is excellent, and Giorgio visits every table to ensure that the evening is going as expected. The menu is extensive, but start with one of the carpaccio choices and follow with the tuna, cooked "New York" style with anchovies, capers, olives, and tomatoes (incidentally, Giorgio has purchased his own boat to ensure fish is truly fresh). For the more carnivorous, the pork loin, rolled with spinach and ricotta and served with mushroom sauce, is a definite hit.

CODFATHER
The Codfather opened as a Seafood restaurant and Sushi Bar about five years ago - one of the first Sushi venues in Cape Town. They serve an excellent array of fresh seafood and sushi in a very vibey, yet warm and relaxed environment. The business has become more of a “family” over the years and many of their earliest staff members are still with them. They do not have any menus and the unique way in which the waiters help you put your meal together works beautifully in that it allows you to select everything according to your appetite and budget. In other words the options and possibilities are endless .The uniqueness of the way they work still intrigues and thrills their customers. Codfather is situated in Camps Bay, home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Cape Town - with wonderful, sweeping views of the ocean and Lions Head. They have the Sushi Bar at one end with a circular conveyor belt and informal seating and then their main restaurant seating area, including a separate smoking section (also with views). The large sliding window frontage allows them to open up to those beautiful warm Summer nights the Cape experiences. In addition there is a large, open fireplace situated in a very unique spot in the centre of it all for the cold winter nights.

DEN ANKER
Their name is Belgian, their ambience international and their setting spectacular. You'll find them on the quayside of Cape Town's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, where the Atlantic ocean meets the mother city. Here gulls swoop, seals bask in the sun, and passing yachts enhance the view. Take an umbrella shaded table on their terrace, at the African Queen bar, or in their streamlined interior, where wall-to-wall windows make the most of the picture- postcard backdrop of Table Mountain.Described by restaurant critics as 'one of the Waterfront's most popular pioneers' they're now celebrating their 12th anniversary, proud of the accolades for food and mood they've received over the last decade.Enjoy the friendly ambience. Their serving staff (judged tops in the Waterfront) is attentive and smiling. Menus revolve round fresh, seasonal dishes like just-caught crayfish or herring flown in from Europe. Specialities range from generous pots of mussels and frites to traditional South African fare; gourmet temptations from foie gras brulee to velvet-smooth chocolates from a top Belgian chocolatier.Their beer is Belgian - both top brands and best-selling Anker beer, brewed exclusively for them, are served on tap. Their winelist won gold in the '06 Diners Club International Winelist of the Year Awards, and their house wine is from an award-winning local winery.

FIVE FLIES
Situated in the heart of the Cape's legal and financial district is Five Flies restaurant.Previously an exclusive club cocooned in white washed walls and colonial dark wood where respectful mutterings soothed the halls and private rooms of this landmark building.Today the exterior of this national monument remains unchanged, proudly proclaiming a history of significance and positioning. The interior, until its recent renovation reflected the austere atmosphere of its surroundings, but has now been skilfully remodelled to create a dining space that compliments its simple yet racy food. The interior walls now speak with bolder tones and carefully selected modern art pieces adorn them. The lighting is soft subtle and unobtrusive to your dining experience. The cuisine is innovative, flavoursome and surprising. The energy created by the staff is contagious, and the attention to detail welcomed. There are many elements to be savoured within the Five Flies; from the bare brick wall afternoon wine bar to the interior cobbled courtyard serving casual lunch and dinners, private dining rooms all apportioned with their own individual flair and the sumptuous cigar bar and lounge upstairs. All in all this is a dining venue to be experienced with a sense of anticipation with the guarantee to return.

GINJA / SHOGA
Situated in the trendy Bo-Kaap district of Cape Town, Ginja occupies the ground floor of an old two storey building. First impression of the interior is that it has an "old warehouse" feel with its high ceilings and heavy wooden doors. However, the rich red walls and art deco fittings combine very effectively to produce a French Brasserie look which is both intimate and inviting. After some thoughtful deliberation, "Ginja" was chosen as a suitable name for the establishment, based on the fact that root ginger is used extensively in both Eastern and Western cooking and effectively brings the two cultures together from a culinary perspective. Acclaimed chef Mike Bassett heads up the kitchen which offers an exciting menu of fine dining based on international fusion cuisine. The well planned menu is both interesting and impressive with wonderful combinations such as the Double Lamb Cutlets with White Miso Gorgonzola Sauce and seasoned English Spinach, or the Venison Loin with Bitter Chocolate, crushed basil Potatoes and Shaved Vegetables. Following on the success of Ginja, Gary Wright and Mike Bassett have once again put their talents together and created Shoga (the Japanese word for "ginger"), in the spacious first floor area directly above Ginja. The theme of Shoga is more a bistro/bar, but the décor again makes use of strong colours combined with exposed brickwork and high ceilings, which are in keeping with the "warehouse feel". The restaurant has two main features - the long counters which run parallel down either side which will accommodate casual diners (and cocktail drinkers), and the wood-fired ovens which will be used extensively in the preparation of the tandoor and pizza section of the menu. Much thought has gone into the layout of the interior and in addition to the tables in the main section of the restaurant, there is also a slightly more formal area, with low comfy couches for relaxing either before or after a meal.

HAIKU
A benchmark of Asian cuisine maintaining impeccable high standards. The expansive menu ranges impressively from mainstream five-spice calamari to loh bak gao (turnip cake). The translucent steamed dumplings filled with spinach and cream cheese, the wok chili mushroom beef (fillet with shiitake mushrooms), or the Peking duck. The dimly-lit interior may be chic but it can become comedic trying to navigate the detailed menus in that same light, or hold a conversation over the noise levels. Being slotted into either of the two shifts for dining can limit the experience and bookings can only be made between 11:30am and 4pm. It can be pricey when you get into the swing of things but it is without a doubt worth the price. The wine list is superb, a progressive choice that starts with extremely affordable yet great wines (also by the glass) and expands through a range of price and quality.

IL LEONE
Finally, legendary Joburg Italian eatery Mastrantonio has opened its doors in the Mother City with a satellite restaurant with bright open interiors and muted tones. The food, of course, is what adds the colour. Taking classic staples, diners dig into antipasti for the table or the legendary fresh porcini while the favourites in the mains includes the subtlest saffron risotto and veal saltimbocca. For the heartier dishes, fl avours are robust where they need to be and, with dishes such as the panfried sole, delicate and restrained. Filled to the rafters with the stylish set, Il Leone marries laid-back, authentic fl avour with a contemporary feel.

JARDINE
There are many levels of dining at Jardine, but the tasting menu is a superb way to explore George Jardine’s seamless way with food. Sample a single poached oyster on truffled scrambled egg, or raised pork belly with butternut and basil on a little sugary cake of aubergine confit with a perfectly crisp crackling wafer. However, when wine pairings are included it is investment-league stuff. Upstairs is minimal with the kitchen on view, while the downstairs area with post-box red walls, textured wallpaper and geometric wooden tables is suited for lunch or evening drinks. In this context menu choices are seared sirloin with bearnaise and a green salad or deepfried squid. Staff knowledge of the main menu sometimes isn’t as comprehensive as it should be. The wine list is a succinct but satisfactory spread of main varietals including their house labelled wine – remember to finish with a grappa.

PANAMA JACKS
From humble beginnings, before the opening of the V&A Waterfront circa 1989, this former boatyard became a household name well known throughout South Africa and indeed internationally for its live lobster, live abalone, live oysters, mussels, quality prawns, langoustines and fresh line fish. From their seawater tanks through which pass 30,000 litres of seawater an hour, you may choose your lobster or abalone. They also keep their local mussels and Namibian oysters alive in the tanks so that their guests may enjoy not only the freshest but also the livest in town. Line fish is delivered daily to Panama Jack's and through their long standing with the fishing community in the Western Cape they are assured of a large variety of fresh caught line fish. Over and above this they have prawns from India, Langoustines from Mozambique and calamari from the South Atlantic. Add to this a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere of a wharf side shack in Cape Town's commercial harbour and you have the makings of a wonderful experience not to be enjoyed anywhere else in South Africa. Loosen your tie, better still, don't wear one, sit back, relax and enjoy their ambience with its flag bedecked ceiling and casual atmosphere. Let them give you an unforgettable seafood experience. For those who do not eat seafood they have a variety of alternatives ranging from fillet, rump and pasta dishes. Vegetarian dishes are also available.

PIGALLE
Pigalle owes its name to a vibrant square in Paris which is famed for its night life, and its name is certainly appropriate, as the restaurant overlooks the nightly hustle and bustle of Somerset Road where a huge revival has put Greenpoint firmly on the map as the trendy area of town. Owners Victor and Naldo Goncalves have many successful years in the restaurant industry, and embraced the challenge of converting a huge old ice-rink into a stunning 300 seater restaurant which simply oozes glamour from every pore. A spacious dance floor and a live band every evening, ensures that Pigalle is able to offer the very best in dinner dancing for its sophisticated clientele (including a fair amount of celebrities). Much of the décor was shipped down from Johannesburg including the spectacular chandeliers which contrast superbly with the stark tubular pipes criss-crossing the enormous ceiling. Dramatic red and black upholstery and luxurious carpeting create an opulent décor, that is off-set by the simple white walls with eye-catching light displays. Certain feature walls have been painted a warm ruby red to create the perfect backdrop for the larger than life 30’s style prints which add the finishing touches to the exciting interior. An impressive bar, handcrafted in rich dark wood, has plenty of seating for those enjoying a pre dinner drink, and offers a selection of speciality cocktails such as the Pigalle Petal (gin, rose syrup and litchi juice) as well as a variety of flavoured martinis. On the food side, the menu focuses on Seafood and Portuguese specialities. The shellfish - prawns, langoustines, crayfish, and of the course the Seafood Platters, are all highly recommended with tried and tested recipes that ensure that the shellfish is cooked to perfection. Traditional Portuguese dishes such as Trinchado - spicy beef cubes, and Chorico Sausage are both popular starters together with the pan-fried prawns. Main course specialities include the Duck Mandarin with a Grand Marnier Sauce and the spatchcock Baby Chicken Peri Peri. The desserts are rich and decadent with choices such as the sinfully delicious baked Cheesecake or the smooth rich Crème Brulee. Pigalle is also open for lunch and has a separate light lunch menu to enjoy on the terrace.

Chef Ronan O’Dwyer offers sophisticated dining in fairly private spaces. His seasonal menu includes four categories – with no minimum number of courses – and optional wine matches for those who don’t fancy trawling the list. A red onion tarte tatin or grilled quail in coriander seeds may precede a prawn and scallop risotto topped with seared tuna and a splash of lobster bisque. Although canard à l’orange isn’t on the list, the duo of duck breast and confit ravioli should satisfy.
